Meet the piece

Broken Jar is a soft sculpture about exhaustion, survival, and becoming alive through rupture.

Broken Jar was once an ordinary vessel, created to hold, contain, and carry whatever was placed inside. For years, it accepted expectations, pressure, responsibilities, and emotions that did not belong to it. Until one day, something inside began to change. After years of suppression, the jar grew a head to think, arms to reach, and legs to escape. It became a strange creature: no longer just a container, but not completely free from its past. Its cracks are not signs of failure. They are evidence that it survived.

Broken Jar comes from the Chinese expression po guan zi po shuai, describing the moment when someone stops trying to maintain perfection and accepts their brokenness. Through wool fiber sculpture, an ordinary object becomes a living presence. The damaged surface, worn texture, and imperfect form represent emotional scars and the beauty of survival. The work asks whether breaking means losing value, or whether breaking can become the beginning of becoming something new.
