Meet the piece
Zhuang Sheng - The Butterfly Dreamer is a large marionette soft sculpture suspended between dream and reality.
Zhuang Sheng lives between dream and reality. Inspired by the ancient Chinese story of Zhuangzi's Butterfly Dream, this work explores the mysterious boundary between existence, identity, and imagination. Zhuang Sheng does not know whether he is the dreamer or the dream itself. Unlike ordinary puppets, he is not simply controlled by invisible strings. His marionette form becomes part of the work's meaning: memory, destiny, time, and emotion appear as unseen forces that guide the body.
The butterfly dream of Zhuangzi challenges our understanding of identity. Through the form of a marionette, this soft sculpture asks whether we are the creators of our own movements, or whether every life is connected by invisible strings. The softness of wool contrasts with the philosophical weight of the subject, preserving traces of the hand and making the sculpture feel like a memory that has taken physical form.
